THE NEWS

What's the headline?

LeBron James: Racism is hidden but alive

Is there a video/image you can include?
Imatge relacionada

Can you explain it in your own words?

NBA superstar LeBron James says racism may appear hidden, but it is alive every single day in the US, and across the world. Speaking at a San Francisco press conference ahead of a game, he also referenced Emmett Till, an African-American boy who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955. He said his mother decided to hold an open-casket funeral to show the world the hate he had suffered.

Add 3 new words you have learnt

Lynched: Linxat
Casket: Taüt
Hidden: Ocult

Why is it relevant to you?

Is important because although people say that racism has improved, we all know that in the world there are racist people (one of them the president of the United States) and it's very unfair that the only difference is the color of te skin.

How is this connected with other news that have an impact on our world?

We can relate this issue of racism with news emerging from Trump, most decisions are racist and undermine much of the world.

Rag'n'Bone Man

Singer-songwriter Rory Graham has an amazing, soulful voice: listen to his single "Human". But what a bizarre stage name! a "rag-and-bon man" collects junk which can be reused. Rory does this too. He creates a new sound from old jazz, soul and blues music!

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (summary)

Sherlock HolmeS and Dr. John Watson  receive a visit from Dr. James Mortimer, who wishes to consult them before the arrival of Sir Henry Baskerville , the last of the Baskervilles.
About letting Sir Henry go to Baskerville Hall, owing to a supposed family curse. He tells Holmes and Watson the legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles, a demonic dog that first killed Sir Hugo Baskerville several hundred years ago  and is believed to kill all Baskervilles in the region of Devonshire.
Holmes dismisses it as a fairy tale, but Mortimer narrates the events of the recent death of his best friend, Sir Charles Baskerville, Sir Henry's uncle. Although he was found dead in his garden without any trace of physical damage, Sir Charles's face was distorted as if he died in utter terror, from heart failure. He alone had noticed footprints at some distance from the body when it was found; they were the paw marks of a gigantic hound.
Holmes decides to send Watson to Baskerville Hall along with Sir Henry, claiming that he is too busy to accompany them himself. Sir Henry quickly develops a romantic interest in Beryl Stapleton, the step-sister of his neighbour Jack Stapleton, a local naturalist. Meanwhile, a homicidal maniac, escaped from Dartmoor Prison, lurks on the moor.
Holmes eventually makes an appearance, having been hiding in the vicinity for some time making his own investigation. An effective scene, not in the original book, occurs when Watson and Sir Henry attend a seance held by Mrs. Mortimer. In a trance, she asks, "What happened that night on the moor, Sir Charles?" The only reply is a lone howl, possibly from a hound. After some clever deception by Holmes, he surmises that the true criminal is Stapleton, a long-lost cousin of the Baskervilles, who hopes to claim their vast fortune himself after removing all other members of the bloodline.
Stapleton kept a huge, half-starved, vicious dog trained to attack individual members of the Baskervilles after prolonged exposure to their scent. However, when the hound is finally sent to kill Sir Henry Baskerville, Holmes and Watson arrive to save him just in time. They kill the hound. Stapleton then traps Holmes down in the hound's underground kennel, and sends Watson into the moor to meet Holmes. Holmes cuts his way out of the kennel and returns to the house and destroys the poison that Stapleton had just given to the wounded Baskerville. Stapleton pulls a gun and flees. Holmes says ominously, "He won't get very far. I've posted constables along the roads and the only other way is across the Grimpen Mire." Holmes is praised for his work on the case, and he turns in.

DESCRIBING A PHOTO

In this photo I can see a man and a baby. There are at home in the living room. On the left we can see the man holding the baby with his right hand and vacuuming with his left hand. The baby is wearing white rompers and the man is wearing a white T-shirt, a dark red shirt and jeans. In behind of photo I can see a sofa and on the wall there is a picture. On the floor I can see a plate with food in the center and in the left part a bucket with dirty clothes I suppose. It’s a very colorful and funny scene. There is a lot happening in this photo.
I chose this photo because it describes the life of a father when he is a beginner and he has to take care of his son and, at the same time, he has to do the housework. I think it’s a very funny image. Describes the reality in a funny way and it is still an everyday scene. I like it.

REALITY TV SHOWS ARE GOOD ENTRETAINMENT

Writing 3:

Realities TV shows are very popular form of entertainment on TV now days.
Firstly, I think that there is a lot of variety in reality TV show. You can watch singing or cooking competitions or programmers about building houses or travelling around the world.
On the other hand, some that people think that reality TV is an easy way for become famous. Another disadvantage is that some programmers always follow the same format and this can be boring to watch.
To sum up, I thinks that reality TV have advantages and lot of disadvantage but it’s a good entertainment.

MY TRIP TO ITALY

Hello everybody!

My name is Ona and now I'm going to talk about my experience in Italy!

Our trip started the Monday 3th of April . We met at school at 5.00 am and we went by bus to Barcelona, there we took a flight with Milan's destination. After that, we traveled by bus again, but this time we went to Sirmione, after visit the city and to have lunch we return to the road to arrive to Verona. We left the bags in the hotel and after that we visited the Arena and Juliet's house.

The second day we take a train to go to Venecia, the city where everybody wanted to arrive. There we visited the Rialto's bridge, Saint Mark's square and basilica, and a glass workshop too. I have to say that there I ate the best pizza I've ever ate. After this experience we returned to Verona.

The following day we made the bags and we went to Florència by train. We were walking around the city till the night and then we returned to the hotel. The fourth day we visited a lot of things, between these, we visited: la galeria dels Uffizi, Santa Maria del Fiore, el baptisiteri, el palazzo Vecchio, el ponte Vecchio, el David...  The fourth day was the most intensive.

The fifth day, the last one, we made the bags and we saw Florència from the Piazza Miquelangelo, and then we visited a city named Lucca. After Lucca we went to Pisa and there we visited the cathedral, el baptisteri, the tower... After this we went to the airport were the flight was delayed, and we were spending the time with another Catalan school. Finally we arrived home at Friday night.

No to Morning exams

Exams should not take place in the morning because teenagers brains are not fully awake, says on Oxford academic. A sleep expert at the University of Oxford, Paul Kelley, says college and universit exams should be confined to the afternoon because it is unfair to hold such important exams for young people before noon. "The body clock of 16- to 21-year-olds shifts dramatically by, on average, almost three hours" he says. "So holding an exam at 9am is equivalent to a 6.30am exam for an adult".
No an ideal time!

WRITING AN INFORMAL EMAIL

Hi Lucy,
How are you? I haven't written for ages because I have a lot of exams but I'm on holiday now.
It was great to hear that you are coming to Banyoles to practise your Spanish. I know you've never been to Catalonia before. There are som things you might find confusing! We don't usually speak Spanish because in Catalonia the people speak Catalan, bun don't worry we know spanish very well! Have you ever had a conversation with a Spanish person? Catalan and Spanish has some differents vocabulary. What do you think "perro", "como estas?" and "hasta otra!" mean? The answer is "gos", "com estàs?" and "fins ara!".

Anyway, who is coming with you? All of my frineds want to meet you, so text me when you arrive.

Give my love to your family.

Take care,
